Resizing Windows 2000 File System
using free storage space on InfoSlice.

When the InfoSlice RAID array is configured with resizable partitions and the Windows 2000 machine is using an InfoSlice partition as a dynamic disk with NTFS, it is easy to grow these dynamic disks by adding to them unused space from the InfoSlice. This document describes this process step-by-step.

1. Connect to the Webmin interface of the InfoSlice via your favorite web browser. As always, use https instead of regular http at the beginning of the URL. Login to the Webmin using your InfoSlice administrator user name and password. From the main Webmin screen select the "Device Partition Manager" icon and scroll down to find the RAID device where the partition to be grown resides:

2. After clicking on the partition number in the middle column ("1" in this example), you will be presented with a screen similar to this:

3. In the text field at the bottom of the screen type in the number of gigabytes (in multiples of the resize increment value that the partition was built with) you would like to add to this partition. You can use fractions. For example, to add 100 MBytes, type 0.1. Click on the "Add to Partition" button once you entered the desired number. You will see the screen similar to this:

Note that the partition has been grown already. However, the system using this InfoSlice partition/LUN does not know about the change yet.

4. On the Windows 2000 machine that uses the now resized partition, open the "Computer Management" window by clicking on the "Start" button, then selecting "Programs", "Administrative Tools", and finally, "Computer Management" from the pop-up menus. Click on the "Disk Management" item on the left pane. Once it loads, right-click on it again to access the pop-up menu and select the "Rescan Disks" item from it:

5. Once the disks are rescanned, you will see the new, and as yet unused, space of Disk 2 (Dynamic) appear in the right pane in the row of the disk, which was resized in the previous steps. In this example, additional 50 GBytes are discovered by a rescan on Disk 2:

6. Now the NTFS file system of the simple volume "G:" can be extended by right-clicking on the volume and selecting "Extend volume..." item from the pop-up menu:

7. A new window appears, which allows you to choose the amount of space being added to the file system:

8. The confirmation window shows how much space was added:

9. Now the volume is grown and ready to be used by Windows 2000 applications. Note that while the additional space is displayed in its own box, in the "Disk Management" windows, it has the same letter and volume name as the extended Simple Volume, and is in effect now an integral part of that volume.
